another new chapter
Last fall I sat down to see how many bedrooms I could pack into a floor plan, and what I ended up with and what we kept coming back to was this U shape. Bedrooms have to have windows, of course, which means if you just build a big rectangle you will have bedrooms all […]
We’ve had some delays (again) trying to get the foundation walls up. the footings have been there for a week now, but it’s all about scheduling to get the concrete forms in and poured now. As of right now that is scheduled to be finished middle of next week and we can begin framing right […]
My last couple posts weren’t terribly positive, so I thought I’d try to balance it out with some good news I received just today. Way back at the beginning of this thing, there was a question about utilities. You might remember if you read the early posts telling the story of the property and how […]
We have started digging! This is huge, and it was a long time in coming. But I guess that’s been true of everything so far, right? Maybe I should just be adjusting my expectations. We had a few setbacks along the way to getting the basement dug, so it’s amazing to see an actual big […]

I’ve pulled 3 building permits on the house I live in now, it’s now about twice as big as it was when I bought it. For each of those permits I downloaded some free cad software off the internet and drew up my own plans. That’s how I began this project also, I’ve spent a […]
Thanks to a lot of support at home and help from friends, the builder’s license part of the project is finished. It feels really good to cross something big off the list! I’ve been studying my borrowed test prep material, and I actually found a few places online where people seem to have created their […]
To recap where we are at with out current plan for the house, we are planning to build a house big enough for our family, plus an apartment in the basement that we can rent out to teens aging out of foster care, and also have a couple of bedrooms available for independent living. So […]
